How'd They Do That?: Nesting Styles in InDesign
Utilize this great feature for any text-heavy list.
June/July 2007
Building your nest
Nesting character styles into your paragraph style settings is a great way to create consistency in a list of names on a phone tree or classified ad file. Names can be set a certain way, with body copy and phone numbers set differently. Use the following steps to establish a variety of styles within a single paragraph.

1. Create or select a text box containing a list. To first set a character style for the names and phone numbers in your list, choose Window > Type & Tables > Character Styles. Click the palette options button and select New Character Style.

2. In the New Character Style dialog box, select Basic Character Formats and enter (or choose) a bold font for the names and phone numbers on the list. (We used Helvetica Neue 85 Heavy at 10 pt. with the leading set to auto.) Name your character style (Names & Numbers) so it is easily referenced for later use. Click OK

3. Next, choose Window > Type & Tables > Paragraph Styles. Click the palette options button and select New Paragraph Style.

4. Select Basic Character Formats. To build the foundation in which to nest our character style, set the paragraph to a regular text font. (We used Helvetica Neue 55 Roman at 10 pt. with the leading set to auto.) Do NOT click OK.

5. In the Paragraph Style Options dialog box, select Indents and Spacing. Set the Space After to 12 pts., or .1667 in. Do NOT click OK.

6. Select Drop Caps & Nested Styles. Click New Nested Style.

7. Select your character style (Names & Numbers) from the drop-down as shown in figure 7.

8. Next select Up To as shown in figure 8. This will apply your style from the beginning of the text until a specific marker that will be assigned in the last drop-down.

9. In this example, it will be an en-dash in the document. Type the en-dash in the last drop-down as shown in figure 9.

10. Click the New Nested Style button and add two more nested styles as shown in figure 10. Click OK, and apply your new paragraph style to the copy. You have now applied changes to multiple portions of type within a block of copy using just one paragraph style.

Note: You may have to click Clear Override in the Paragraph Styles palette if the changes to not automatically appear.
